Oct 2016 | STRACON GyM joins forces with GDI

On October 18th, 2016, STRACON GyM (SGyM) led by Steve Dixon (CEO), was visited by its partners, Franco Bonfanti (CEO) and Giacomo Bonfanti (Commercial Director) of Grupo Desarrollo Infraestructura (GDI), a Mexican company specialized in the provision of infrastructure services in Mexico.

The companies formed a JV named "GDI -STRACON GyM" with the aim of integrating more than 30 years of experience, to provide integrated mining services in Mexico.

Currently, both companies are offering their services to the mining industry in Mexico, including to Goldcorp, which operates a gold mine in the state of Zacatecas, where GDI - STRACON GyM is providing engineering services.

Set 2016 | STRACON GyM participated in the CHINA MINING Conference and Exhibition 2016

STRACON GyM participated in the China Mining Congress & Expo 2016, the most important Worldwide Asian Mining Event of the year, which took place from Thursday the 22nd to Sunday 25th September in the city of Tianjin. This event is considered of national interest by the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines, and we attended it as part of the National Delegation, consisting of leading authorities and companies in the mining sector.

During the three-day event, STRACON GyM managed to successfully present the scope of its services to major Chinese investors and thus strengthen its international presence under the main theme of this year's event: "Novel concepts, innovative solutions".

There were more than 9,000 delegations from 60 countries and regions who attended this year, and the event brought together mining companies with presence in the entire value chain. With our participation we confirm our commitment within the mining industry supported by the Graña y Montero Group.

Set 2016 | Participation in the Expomina 2016

In line with our commitment to the mining industry in Peru, on the 14th, 15th and 16th of September STRACON GyM (SGyM) took part in the fair Expomina 2016, where our sales representatives provided information to all attendees and customers.

The reception was a success as in previous years; our recognition as the world-class mining contractor with a significant presence in Latin America has allowed us to consolidate our position in the mining services industry.

Our booth was visited by, current and potential customers interested in learning more about our services and projects developed; logistics service providers and young professionals interested in the industry and joining our company.

The SGyM team had an active participation in the program, identifying its purpose to the essential theme of the event: "The Year Boost Mining". Finally, confirm that we are already planning our participation in the Perumin 2017, event where we expect to continue contributing actively to the development of mining activity in the country and the region.

Feb 2016 | STRACON GyM sponsors the PDAC 2016

Ago 2015 | San Ramon Project start construction

Red Eagle Mining, has begun the construction of the San Ramon gold project in the department of Antioquia, Colombia. Construction will take place over 12 months and will accommodate the start of mining operations scheduled for H2 2016.

Local contractors have started initial surface earthworks and are responsible for the construction of a flotation/carbon-in-leach processing plant and upgrading of the 8km access road. Underground development and mining operations will be provided by STRACON GyM.

The San Ramon mine, with a CAPEX of US$74M, will have a capacity of 1,000 t/d and will produce 50,000oz/yr for the current eight year mine life.

Jul 2015 | STRACON GyM announces awarding of new contract in Colombia

STRACON GyM is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Red Eagle Mining Corporation for the development and operation of the gold mine "San Ramon", located in the Antioquia Batholith near the town of Santa Rosa de Osos, 70 kilometers north of Medellin, Colombia.

STRACON GyM has been awarded the service contract for an amount of US$ 155 million to develop and operate for a period of eight years the San Ramon mine. In addition, as part of the agreement, STRACON GyM has acquired shares from Red Eagle Mining Corporation for an amount of US$ 3.5 million, and after signing the contract, a new purchase of shares for the same amount will make STRACON GyM a minority stakeholder with 19.94%.

San Ramon project will produce 50,000 thousand ounces of gold annually though a 360,000TPY plant capacity during the lifetime of the project and plans to start such operations in 2016.

STRACON GyM has been awarded the Mapfre “Safety Excellence Award 2014", which recognizes organizations that have achieved a high level of Health and Safety performance in the work place.

We received the highest accolade for our ongoing commitment to the reduction and prevention of risks in our operations, also collecting the "Golden Clover" award for maintaining high safety standards.

At the awards ceremony, which took place on June 10th 2015 at the Country Club Lima Hotel, STRACON GyM’s excellent safety statics led the mining category, which reflects our effective risk mitigation and controls at project level.

The first quarter of 2015 brings new challenges for STRACON GyM. The 2015 strategic plan consolidates a strong vision and mission based on our corporate values, Compliance, Quality, Reliability, Efficiency and Safety, whose purpose is focused on positioning ourselves as the most reliable mining services and mass earthworks company in Latin-America.

In view of our growth, in early March, STRACON GyM with the Graña y Montero Group Board, named Mr. Stephen Dixon as the new CEO of our company.

Steve Dixon has occupied the position of Chief Executive Officer of Operations since 2001 in STRACON S.A.C and later in STRACON GyM. Following the merger with GyM, he led the organization in conjunction with the General Manager Mr. Octavio Cabrera, who has now been designated as Javier Prado´s project manager for the Graña y Montero group.

Steve will continue to be responsible for the department’s heads of Operations, Administration and Finance, Safety, Equipment and Logistics, Continuous Improvement, Commercial, Technical, Human Resources Management, having the responsibility to continue the business development.

In STRACON GyM we are convinced that this new structure will ensure greater efficiency, coordination and synergy between all our organizational areas.

On April the 23rd STRACON GyM participated in the XIX International Mining Safety Seminar at the Sheraton Hotel, which brings together leading national and international exhibitors, with the aim of exposing updated topics related to our sector problems and applicable mechanisms for resolution.

In this opportunity, Julio Martinez, SSOMA manager from STRACON GyM explained the structure of our business strategy, through an integrated management system which is based on the core values of our organization and continuous improvement of safety processes that are currently utilized in our projects.

The integrated STRACON GyM management system, aims to measure and improve the performance of our activities which allows us to improve our efficiency increasing our competitiveness in the mining sector. . STRACON GyM will continue with this business strategy and keep contributing to a sustainable development on prevention of accidents in the Peruvian mining sector.

Apr 2015 | Finalists for the "Annual Award for Successful Experience 2014" Rimac Insurance

STRACON GyM is participating for the first time in the “Annual Award for Successful Experience 2014” (Premio anual a la experiencia exitosa 2014). This award recognizes the organizations that contribute to the Prevention of Risks at the workplace among companies maintaining a Hazardous Work Supplemental Insurance policy (SCTR) with Rimac.

STRACON GyM as an active operator of prevention programs has been placed in the top 20 finalists thanks to its project: Condor Road Safety Plan that aims to improve the controls of the “Transportation of Personnel” through the following initiatives:

  • Evaluation of routes established in each project
  • Monitoring the vehicles in route via GPS, emergency announcements - SOS, geofencing, and travel speed, etc.
  • Evaluation of the driver’s behavior through video recordings of the journey, training in defensive driving and additional co-driver for the safe operation of the vehicle to assist if require for the fatigue.
  • Increase the standard of the driver’s experience.
  • Improve the standard of vehicles for transportation of personnel.

The Condor Road Safety Plan has been evaluated by the technical committee of the competition using the following criteria: project relevance, innovation, efficiency, integration with business management, impact and sustainability.

If awarded, STRACON GyM will receive 10 positions for an international exchange to get to know the best practices in safety and a diploma with distinction and a trophy that would be award at the finalist ceremony.

STRACON GyM continues awarded the announcement of the outcome of the Rimac Insurance final results, while continues to apply innovative solutions to motivate a culture of prevention and safety throughout the organization.

Apr 2015 | STRACON GyM again contributes to the foundation of Mackenzie Health

STRACON GyM is sponsoring for the second year, the 6th edition of the Mackenzie Health Foundation Golf Tournament, organized by our strategic partner HudBay Minerals. The tournament will take place on August 14 at the Eagles Nest Golf Club in town Ontario Canada, for the purpose of raising funds for MRI equipment for the Mackenzie Richmond Hospital

In 2014 the contribution made by STRACON GyM together with other sponsors was $ 100,000. This year is expected to exceed that goal and reach the $ 600,000 needed to achieve the ultimate goal.

Apr 2015 | Recognized for our responsible management

On April 7th, 2015, our company was awarded the "Socially Responsible Company" Seal (Distintivo ESR), at the ceremony organized by the association Peru 2021 and the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (CEMEFI).

The Socially Responsible Company Seal is granted to those companies that stand out because of their compromise with sustainable development and their good practices of social responsibility. This recognition was gained through a rigorous self-diagnosis in which the 10 main companies of our Group participated. Our management was evaluated in four dimensions: life quality at the company, business ethics, entailment with community and environmental preservation.

Such recognition is due to our special way to do business, our Graña y Montero Work Style, which encourage us both to grow from the responsible management of our operations, and to share well-being with society.

Jan 2015 | Constancia Megaproject Starts Copper Production

Starting August 2011, STRACON GyM has been engaged in an alliance with HudBay Peru to develop the Constancia mining project. The project had a total capital expenditure budget of US$ 1,700 million and started production of copper in December 2014.

STRACON GyM has contributed to the development of the mine through the construction of civil works such as access and haul roads, tailings dams, water storage reservoirs, sediment control structures, construction of waste dumps and the operation of the open-cut mine together with the maintenance of the mobile mining equipment fleet.

The civil earthworks construction period involved the participation of over 2,500 STRACON GyM employees from different specialties and backgrounds. The successful on-time on-budget execution also showed our strength in operating efficiently and promoting our safety culture. This safety culture allowed us to reach 7,412,819 man hours without lost-time incidents.

The Constancia mobile mining equipment fleet consists of 27m3 Hitachi shovels loading Caterpillar 793F 220 tonne capacity mining trucks, Caterpillar 994H front-end loaders, Caterpillar 24M graders, Caterpillar D10T bulldozers, and a large fleet of small ancillary equipment.

STRACON GyM, along with HudBay, will continue working to meet the challenges and demands of this large project, always adhering to the “Graña y Montero Style” which governs our quality and efficiency standards.

Jan 2015 | STRACON GyM commences development of the Shahuindo Project

STRACON GyM, a subsidiary of Grana y Montero Group is pleased to announce that it has received a Letter of Intent from Rio Alto Mining to establish and undertake open pit mining operations at the Shahuindo Project, located in the province of Cajabamba, department of Cajamarca, Peru.

According to the document signed on October 2, 2014, the two companies, Rio Alto and STRACON GyM, will enter into an agreement based on the successful alliance currently in place for the development of the La Arena gold project in the department of La Libertad .

During the first months of 2015, STRACON GyM will begin bulk earthworks activities for the construction of the mine operational facilities, prior to commencement of mining operations during 2016. Operational synergies will be created between the Shahuindo and La Arena projects.

Rio Alto estimates that Shahuindo will produce 100,000 ounces of gold per year, with a plant processing capacity of 10,000 tonnes per day. Rio Alto plans to expand this processing capacity significantly in the future.

Dec 2014 | Christmas Projects STRACON GyM

STRACON GyM shares the vision of sustainability Grana and Montero Group through the implementation of five social responsibility initiatives that took place in the main areas of influence of our projects and the city of Lima.

The goal of each project focused on promoting education, health, safety, respect and care for the environment, through courses for the communities that promote the development of citizenship and allow a better future.

The activities included in the project "Christmas Solidarity", benefited children in areas of Cajamarca, Cusco and Lima, who received training in recycling techniques and courses of sensory stimulation for those with disabilities. At the end of these activities STRACON GyM teams received the thanks of all participants and shared a good moment with their families and community members.

Nov 2014 | Recognized for our commitment to research and innovation

Today we were honored with the highest recognition of the Peru 2021 Award for the Company’s Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development by our program: STIMULUS to the shared innovation which won the first place in the Multistakeholder category. The results were announced at a ceremony in charge of the Peru 2021 Association with the support of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.

The program -in line with our “Grow and Share” sustainability model- promotes the development of a research culture in engineering in order to encourage innovation so the country's competitiveness can be improved. Also, it considers a comprehensive strategy that includes the organization between the State, the academy and the company, development of capacities and transmission of knowledge.

The initiatives included in the program are the following: the Graña y Montero Award for Research in Peruvian Engineering, the Engineering Portal (PI), Engineering Research and the “Structure your ideas” competition. Thanks to this innovative proposal, there are more members of the engineering community who are interested in research and have the capabilities to develop it. Also, the institutional links have been strengthened and the gap between the academy’s production and the business sector’s demand has been reduced.

Winners for the second year

Finally, it should be noted that this is the second year that we received the highest award of the competition. The Line 1 of the Lima Metro won in the last edition for its Culture program.

Nov 2014 | Debswana Diamond Company visits STRACON GyM

“Debswana Diamond Company", the world´s leading producer of diamonds located in Botswana – Africa, recently visited our El Brocal project, in order to learn about the "ASTiD Advisory System for Tired Drivers" program with the vision of applying this technology to their Orapa and Jwaneng mine sites.

ASTiD - assesses the level of tiredness in drivers while operating heavy equipment through an electronic and sensorial device capable of detecting the characteristics of the state of fatigue. The live information is transmitted via the 3G telecommunication system to a central monitoring control room which immediately alerts the mining operations team should there be a fatigue observation noted. This instant notification helps address the immediate situation and greatly reduces the likelihood of a fatigue related incident.

STRACON GyM is regarded as a world leader in managing operator fatigue. To achieve this goal, STRACON GyM is assisted by specialist companies such as WOMBATT, and Fatigue Management International Limited utilizing the ASTiD technology..

STRACON GyM participated as part of Groupo Graña y Montero's Engineering and Construction division in the recent Expo Mina 2014 which took place from Wednesday the 10th to Friday 12th September at the Jockey Plaza Convention Center in Lima.

EXPO MINA is in its fourth year of implementation in Lima and is considered to be one of the most important fairs in the Mining Industry. The booth was located in "Pabellón Oro " in the central area of the fair.

More than 80 thousand visitors, mostly foreigners attended the fair. The group was able to provide detailed information about work and projects which have contributed to our success in the Engineering and Construction industry over the past 81 years.

STRACON GyM committed to a sustainable development, sponsored the 5th Golf Tournament Mackenzie Health Foundation; which was held on July 7th at the Wyndance Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada and organized by HUDBAY MINERALS.

The main objective of the event was to raise funds for the training of medical staff, promote educational opportunities and acquire the necessary technology for the care of patients in the Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, as well as for the future construction of the Vaughan Hospital Mackenzie.

Oct 2013 | Graña y Montero Group was ranked 4th among the 100th Peruvian Companies with best corporate reputation

A new milestone was established for our organization. The study "Business Monitor of Corporate Reputation 2013" conducted annually by the international consulting firm Merco, partnered with Datum, Gestión and KPMG, placed the Graña y Montero Group 4th among the 100th Peruvian companies with better corporate reputation. In the 2012 edition, we obtained the 7th position in the same ranking, improving 3 positions.

This new award given in recognition to the favorable opinion of high executives, financial analysts, union members, consumer organizations, opinion leaders and citizens is related to our excellent economic and financial performance, international growth, corporate management, innovation capabilities and talent development, as well as our ethics behavior in full compliance of our corporate values.

On Tuesday, the Graña y Montero Group received for second consecutive year the prize "The most admired companies" awarded by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) and G de Gestión magazine. This prize resulted from a survey to senior executives of top companies in the country who acknowledged Graña y Montero among the 10 most admired companies in Peru.

May 2013 | Code of Ethics and Launch of the Ethical Channel

As part of its corporate culture practices, STRACON GyM made a presentation to communicate its Code of Ethics and launch the new Ethical Channel (Canal Ético).

The main goal of the presentation was to revisit the importance of the policies that rule the actions of the associates in their professional life and with their stakeholders, through the company’s Charter of Ethics and Code of Conduct.

To boost this initiative, the company also launched the Canal Ético, intended to gather information that helps to ensure compliance with the aforementioned Charter, through a modern online support system operated by Ernst & Young. This will allow the company to record, analyse and classify information confidentially and anonymously so it can be researched and the issues can be resolved.

STRACON GyM S.A. (a subsidiary of GyM S.A.) is pleased to announce that is has been awarded the Tailings Management Facility construction contract by Minera Panama S.A. The contract involves more than 15 million m3 of excavation, diversion structures and quarry development. Contract duration is 34 months with completion in August 2015. The execution of this contract will involve employment in excess of 1000 employees at peak, of which the vast majority will be Panamanian.

Minera Panama S.A. (a subsidiary of Inmet Mining Corp headquarter in Toronto, Canada) is developing the Cobre Panama project. The Cobre Panama project is an open‐pit mine located in Colón Province, Panama, expected to produce copper, gold, silver, and molybdenum. Minera Panama was granted the rights to the mineral concession to explore and exploit the property under Law 9 for an initial 20 year term with provisions for two consecutive 20 year extensions. The concession area is 13,000 ha and the life of mine is projected to be 31 years, with production starting at the beginning of 2016. The project received the ESIA approval by the Panamanian Environmental Agency in December 2011 and started full construction in May 2012.

STRACON GyM is pleased to announce it has entered into an alliance agreement with Hudbay Peru S.A.C., a subsidiary of Hudbay Minerals Inc., to provide earthmoving and mining services for the development of Hudbay's Constancia copper project, located in the Chamaca, Livitaca and Velille Districts, Province of Chumbivilcas, Department of Cusco, Peru. The scope of work under the five (5) year agreement includes initial construction of the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) and mine pre-stripping activities over a two year period with an approximate value of US$300MM, followed by production mining and ongoing TMF construction works for the remainder of the contract with an additional value of approximately US$500MM.

STRACON GyM’s Chief Operating Officer, Steve Dixon, stated that “STRACON GyM very much looks forward to further building upon the relationship established with Hudbay, working with all project stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of Constancia Project.”

Hudbay acquired the Constancia copper porphyry project in 2011. In August 2012 Hudbay’s board of directors approved a US$1.5 billion investment to fund the development and construction of the project. Constancia is expected to produce approximately 85,000t of copper per annum over a 15.3 year mine life, with initial production in late 2014, followed by full production in quarter two 2015.

In July, we organised a collection of blankets and warm clothes at STRACON GyM’s head office for the communities of our Orcopampa Project. This collection benefitted numerous families from Vizcacuto, Marcani, Choquitambo and Cuchurrancho.
